A little village of 643 inhabitants, is located at the extremity of the isle of Ré and it is surrounded by lovely green places as for example the famous small wood named “Trousse-Chemise”.

When you walk across this quiet village, you discover narrow little streets lined with white houses and bordered with hoolyhocks.

Not very far from the center of “Les Portes”, the fine sand beaches offer all the pleasures linked to the sea whatever your age : fishing, swimming, sailing, courses, surfing, paddle, windsurfing.

The wonderful lake of “Fier” offers mooring which are well sheltered and appreciated by yachtmen. You can also play golf, go horse-riding and play tennis. In the privileged and protected place, blessed with an exception al number of sunshine hours per years, there are many marked cycle tracks that enable the tourists to comtemplate real nature and to visit the “ L’Illeau des Niges” : one of the most important bird natural reserves in Europe.

The light, the colours that you can observe when you go for a walk across the salt marshes inspired many painters who tried to express this gentle way of life.
